Motorcycle Driving Guide: France
France is an amazing country to explore by motorcycle. The coasts, national parks, and the mountains make for some truly bucket list motorcycle destinations in France.
There are, however, a few specific things you should know about motorcycle riding in France.
What equipment is required in France?
In France, you must ALWAYS wear a helmet (passengers included). You should also always have a high visibility vest for you and if you carry a passenger. In France, unlike other EU countries, you must also have reflective stickers on each side of your helmet.
Is lane-splitting legal?
Lane splitting is legal, common, and aggressive. Cars are used to this so the plus side is that they will move out of your way if they notice that they aren’t giving a motorcycle enough space.
What is the highest average speed limit?
Most highways in France are set 1t 130 km/h, while a few have a limit of 110 km/h
Where can I buy motorcycle gear in France?
The biggest brand for motorcycle clothing and gear in France is Dafy Moto, although you’ll also find plenty of other small brands throughout France.
What do I need to legally drive/rent a motorcycle in France?
If you have an EU license, you should be good to go! If you’re from another country, there may be other regulations.
For Americans, you can drive using your state driving license in France for a year. Although International Driver’s Permits may not always be required, it’s best to have one ready in case they ever ask for it. You can obtain them at your local AAA office.
