Motorcycle Driving Guide: Spain
Spain is one of the most popular destinations for motorcycle riders! Due to its vast landscapes on both the mainland and the islands, you’ll find amazing roads for any type of rider.
What equipment is required in Spain?
In Spain, you must ALWAYS wear a helmet (passengers included). You should also always have a high visibility vest for you and if you carry a passenger.
Is lane-splitting legal?
Technically, no. Do people still do it? 100%
In the big cities it is very common and no one is going to say anything. At red lights, many motorcycles still go through cars in order to reach the front. Heck, I’ve even done it in front of police!
However, the lanes in Spain are smaller than other European countries so it’s actually much more difficult to skirt around the cars. Ride your own ride and drive how you feel comfortable!
What is the highest average speed limit?
Most highways in Spain will only go up to 120 km/h
Where can I buy motorcycle gear in Spain?
Most stores are Mom-and-Pop, but you can also find a Motocard store in almost every major city in Spain
What do I need to legally drive/rent a motorcycle in Spain?
If you have an EU license, you should be good to go! If you’re from another country, there may be other regulations.
For Americans, you can drive using your state driving license for 6 months in Spain. Although International Driver’s Permits may not always be required, it’s best to have one ready in case they ever ask for it. You can obtain them at your local AAA office.
